I love sponge daubers…but….I HATE the price of them!! I mean c’mon! Over a dollar a piece for a tiny chunk of plastic and foam that ya throw away cause the foam wears out…sheesh!!! And while I am not normally known for being cheap, there’s just some waste that I can’t get my mind around…daubers is one of them…lol!
Sooooooo….because I love a challenge……I went searching the other day for a way to replicate a sponge dauber. A dauber that was more cost effective…and I found it…hehehehe!!! I started by searching online for homemade sponge daubers and all I came up with was the big homemade paint daubers that the graffiti artists use, and while neat, uh….not quite what I had in mine..lol.
I had a small collection of high density, round, makeup sponges from the dollar store that I was trying to incorporate into my dauber so with that in mind I hit the hardware store….JACKPOT!! (Yes you can use the sponges on thier own but I tend to get sponge-edge line marks on my work when I do that…I hate that…lol)…….So at the hardware store, low and behold, I stumbled across those little things called “Vinyl Tips”! They are the caps that are used to place on metal pole legs. I took my little stash home, folded my makeup sponges up like little dumplings and popped them in the cap holes & voila!! Environmentally friendly ink daubers! You have to work at it a little to get the sponges into the holes, I just used my longish nails to poke it in till it stayed….and trust me, it stays in there really really well! When the foam wears out you can take it out, flip it the other way and get a some more use out of it and once it’s totally useless, toss it and insert another round.
Now I know you can’t put your finger inside these daubers but really, how important is that…not really! lol
These provide a clean efficient way to apply ink to your projects, and the price point rocks!! The smaller tips are less than 50 cents each, the larger ones about 70 cents… and you don’t need to throw them out!!!!
Here’s some size information for you in case you want to make some for yourself….I used 1/2″ and 7/8″ Vinyl Tips (I prefer the chunkier 7/8″ tip as I have large hands and nails….lol…and yes those are my own nails…no acrylic nails for this gal!!))…….. the foam circles are 2″ in diameter and about 3/8″ thick… and I used about 1/3 of a round sponge for the smaller daubers….the whole sponge for the larger daubers, the larger daubers are easier to assemble. I also inserted some wedge sponges into some of the smaller caps, these are easier to insert! So there ya have it….wedge sponges for the 1/2″ caps, circle sponges for the 7/8″ caps !!
I’d love to know if you make some of these and how they work out for ya…I am loving mine!!
Sometimes I forget about creating masculine cards. Actually, I TOTALLY forget to do it. How about you?
Which is why I like to do #MASCULINEMONDAYS because our fathers, brothers, sons, and significant others deserve a little love too!!!
Here is a simple card that looks quite complicated, but the COOL TREATS stamp set and the coordinating FROZEN TREATS FRAMELITS DIES make it easy. The colors used are Whisper White, Real Red, Soft Sky, Sahara Sand, Soft Suede, & Chocolate Chip. Silver Foil card stock, Tasty Treats DSP (designer series paper) & Copper Metallic Thread add something extra…don’t you think?!? I also absolutely LOVE using the STITCHED SHAPES FRAMELITS DIES when cutting out the greeting!!
Randomly stamping the sprinkles on your card stock creates your own background. A great tip when working with thread is to put a piece of TEAR & TAPE ADHESIVE on the back of your paper…that way you can make your loops and swirls EXACTLY where you want them. Using the Stampin’ Up! markers are great when you are needing to color something. The cherry stem & the greeting were both colored with markers.
You can purchase the stamp set & papers used and many other crafting items on my site listed below!!! Use this host code — UUX7NFH9 — when you order and receive a free gift from me! If your order is over $150, please do not use this code, but you’ll still get the free gift. You can also see all of the upcoming classes offered where you can learn this technique along with many other fun techniques!!!
Crafting can be fun, but sometimes frustrating too. So with that in mind I want to help you get more out of your crafting items!! Every Tuesday I’ll share a tip or trick to make your crafting easier & hopefully a little easier. I’ll be calling it #TuesdayTips & decided since today’s my birthday, what better day to start!! 😄 Stampin’ Up!’s ink pads are really easy to use, however the style has changed a little over the years.
As you can see the top looks the same but the front isn’t labeled the same.
Stampin’ Up! now has stickers with the name of the color available for YOU to put on the front…in different languages…so you’ll be able to get the right name for the color for you.
Also when you have the pads open, especially if your using similar colors, it can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference.
Just use the extra stickers & put them in the inside lip…you’ll see the correct color AND you won’t make the mistake of using with the wrong shade/color!!
Mother’s Day is Sunday! Can you believe it? Sunday!!! Where did the month of May go? We are almost half way through the month and I just wish it would slow down! I have been working on the 4, yes 4, Mother’s Day cards I need to send. My mother & grandmother, soon to be mother in law & my daughter in law are all on my list for cards.
This little gem is going to my daughter in law. Sadly she is going to get it a little late since it’s going in the mail to Texas today…but that just means she can celebrate a second day when she receives the card.
My mother in law’s favorite is yellow, so these beautiful flowers are in Daffodil Delight. The complimentary colors of Rich Razzleberry & Marina Mist were also used.
My mother’s card & grandmother’s card match their personalities to a ‘T’!! I always try to create a card designed for the person in giving it to with this in mind. THAT is what makes crafting so enjoyable.
I hope your Mother’s Day is filled with love, laughter & family!!
Hugs & happy crafting.
